More Pinoys want voter registration in malls

MANILA — More Filipinos want voter registration activities to be held in malls, an online survey of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, who is also the poll body’s Education and Information Division (EID) director, said Tuesday that three out of five Filipinos would like to get registered inside malls.

A 24-hour Twitter survey, conducted by the EID, showed that 96 out of 161 respondents, or 60 percent, chose to have registration in malls.

He said the Comelec en banc is already “seriously considering” requiring at least one mall registration activity per region.

“My goal is to convince the Commission en banc to mandate more,” Jimenez said.

“This can be seen as an indication of the high level of public acceptance of voter registration activities in malls. Convenience is perhaps the most important consideration,” he said on his Twitter account, @jabjimenez.

Meanwhile, 32 out of the 161 respondents, or 20 percent, said they would like to register in schools, while 20 individuals, or 12 percent, preferred to register in local Comelec offices.

A total of 13 respondents, or 8 percent, chose to have voter registration “somewhere else”.

The EID survey noted that their participants are users of the social networking site.

The poll body last held mall voter registration in September 2018, where they accepted applications for registration from all applicants, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and pregnant women.

The Comelec first introduced satellite registrations in malls in 2014.

Earlier, Jimenez said they are looking to restart their continuing voter registration this month.
