KAWIT, Cavite – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), through its Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo (MEA) here, has slated a roundtable discussion with the Department of Education (DepEd)-Cavite ‘Araling Panlipunan’ (social studies) teachers on Aug. 31 to make their lesson plans more appealing to students.
NHCP Cavite Cluster Head and MEA curator Haidee Paulette M. Bedruz said Monday the roundtable discussion would aid history teachers in responding to the challenge to make the country’s historical and cultural heritage appealing to the new generation.
“The meeting’s target is to develop a workable lesson plan where museums will be used as alternative classroom for discussion,” said Bedruz, adding that the mass base of the present generation of students have the penchant for technologically-advanced and highly-visual mediums.
The Aug. 31 activity is in line with the nationwide observance of History Month every August through Proclamation No. 339.
“Layaw: Experiential Learning Using Museum Artifact” is anchored on thematic discussion of a museum artifact based on a lesson plan,” Bedruz said.
Under the program’s framework, the student viewer is engaged for an in-depth historical and art appreciation of the object.
“Beyond the art object’s aesthetic and external value, active learning techniques, like games, writing, drawing, movement or music will be used to allow an alternative learning experience,” she said.
Prior to the 1:30 p.m. meeting, MEA will conduct a hands-on “Layaw” activity experience at 9 a.m., which will feature the artifact “Inang Bayan” and the Proclamation of Independence as topic for discussion.
Aside from the “Layaw” program, MEA will also have “Dugong Rebolusyonaryo y Cuatro”, a blood-letting activity as history month offering.
This activity is inspired by the involvement of Hilaria del Rosario, General Emilio Aguinaldo’s first wife, in the “Hijas de Revolucion,” the precursor of the National Association of the Red Cross.
Now on its 4th year, the blood-letting activity will happen on Aug. 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
MEA is one of the three NHCP-run museums in Cavite, with Museo ni Baldomero ni Aguinaldo (MBA), also located in Kawit town, and the Museo ng Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio (Bonifacio Trial House) in Cavite’s Maragondon.
The museum is located at the ground floor of the iconic Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kaingen village here and is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Gladys Pino/PNA)
