NCR mayors call on LGUs to temporary close cemeteries for ‘Undas’

MANILA – The Metro Manila Council (MMC) on Tuesday (Oct. 12) urged local government units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region (NCR) to close cemeteries, memorial parks, and columbaria from the public for five days to avoid possible spikes in COVID-19 infections.

The MMC – composed of the 17 NCR mayors and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) – has asked LGUs to enact ordinances or adopt resolutions restricting access to these locations for five days, starting on October 29 up to November 2, 2021, through MMDA Resolution No. 21-22 s. 2021.

“It is encouraged that individuals visit the public and private cemeteries, memorial parks, and columbaria on dates earlier than Oct. 29, 2021 or later than Nov. 2, 2021 subject to the prescribed 30% venue capacity,” the resolution read.

Despite a recent “general decrease” in COVID-19 active cases in the NCR, the Department of Health (DOH) continues to caution the public against mass gatherings and continued observance of minimum public health standards.

It noted that wakes, necrological services, funerals, internment, cremation, and inurnment during the period should continue to follow the guidelines set by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

During Nov. 1, Filipinos traditionally troop to cemeteries to pay respects to their departed friends and family members. (PNA) – bny
