There were nearly 500,000 vehicles that traversed EDSA on May 22, the highest in the history of the highway, according to data released by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

According to MMDA Traffic Engineering Center, a total of 425,890 vehicles traveled EDSA on May 22, this volume logged a 4.93% increase.

This is the highest in the history of EDSA compared to the 405,882 vehicles that were recorded passing through EDSA on July 8, 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the recorded travel speed of the vehicles on EDSA from Roxas Boulevard to Monumento (Northbound) was 24.98 kilometers per hour (kph) while it was 22.46 kph on Southbound on May 22.

This is faster compared to the 21.67 kph vehicle travel speed on EDSA-Northbound, while 11.02 kph on EDSA-Southbound on Jan. 20, 2022, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

MMDA Acting Chairperson Atty. Don Artes said the figures showed that vehicles are moving faster despite the higher number of vehicles on EDSA.

Artes stressed the agency’s priority to speed up the travel of vehicles through the effective management and enforcement of traffic laws and regulations on the main streets in collaboration with Metro Manila mayors and other government agencies.
