DUMAGUETE CITY — The new warden of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) district jail in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete City says he is planning to come up with activities to boost the morale of jail personnel after the recent drug haul inside the facility that somehow painted a bad image on them.

Chief Insp. Jonairy Sitchon disclosed this during his courtesy call on Dumaguete OIC police chief, Supt. Gregorio Galsim, Wednesday.

According to the new jail warden, he considers it a big challenge to prevent the entry of contraband items inside the Bajumpandan facility.

He enjoined jail personnel to strictly uphold the human right of every detainee. He did not say yet what activities he would initiate to uplift the morale of his men.

Sitchon, former deputy jail warden of Lapu-lapu City, assumed the post here on Monday, replacing Pricel Arevalo, who was relieved after the recovery of more or less PHP500,000 worth of shabu and suspected cash proceeds from illegal drug sales amounting to more than PHP210,000 during the conduct of a “Greyhound Operation” inside the jail facility early this month.

Arevalo was assigned to Lapu-Lapu City.

Questions were raised as to how the illegal drugs were able to pass through strict security procedures being implemented in the city jail.

Sitchon stressed that aside from securing the detainees or persons deprived of liberty, it is of paramount importance to work for their rehabilitation and values formation while under detention.
