NHA urged to classify fire-prone areas as ‘danger zones’

MANILA — Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte on Saturday asked the National Housing Authority (NHA) to include congested communities that are considered fire traps on its list of “danger zones.”

Belmonte said these congested communities are also found in privately-owned properties and people there must be given priority under the government’s relocation and housing programs.

Belmonte issued the appeal after she inspected the condition of informal settlers, who lived on a lot owned by Manila Electric Corporation along Roces Avenue, which was razed by fire recently.

“When we say danger zones, we would always think of communities along waterways, rivers, and creeks. What about the people in privately-owned lots?” Belmonte said in an interview.

Belmonte considered the place a danger zone area because it is fire-prone.

“Mga bahay nila gawa lang sa mga (Their houses are made from) light materials. I believe it is only right that NHA will also list these areas as danger zones. Ito ay para magkaroon din agad sila ng (This is for them to also have) relocation,” Belmonte said.

Belmonte also requested representatives of the Urban Poor Affairs Office to assist the fire victims and provide them basic comforts that they need. (Ma. Teresa Montemayor/PNA)
