MANILA– No Filipino was reported hurt following a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico in the state of Oaxaca, the Embassy of the Philippines in Mexico said Saturday.
In a report through the Department of Foreign Affairs, the embassy said the jolt happened around 5:30 PM local time (7:30 am, February 17, Philippine time). The epicenter was located around 600 km from Mexico City.
“No casualties have been reported, either among the Filipino community or among the Mexican populace,” said the embassy, however, some buildings were reported damaged in Mexico City and Oaxaca State.
The shaking lasted from 30 seconds up to a minute, and several aftershocks were recorded and felt in some cases.
The quake itself was not as violent as the major temblor that struck the city on September 19, 2017 and caused over 300 fatalities, said the embassy.
For its part, it assured continuous monitoring of the situation and checking with the Filipino community members to confirm their status and safety. (PNA)
