No new registration of voters who just turned 18: Comelec

MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday said young Filipinos who just turned 18 need not register anew as regular voters.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said that youth voters in the recently concluded Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), who have reached the voting age, are now qualified to vote in the May 2019 midterm polls.

“That (register as regular voters) will not be necessary anymore,” Jimenez said in an interview.

The poll body official explained that the Comelec will automatically transfer records from the SK database to the official list of registered voters.

“We will be the ones to transfer their names to the registry,” he added.

There were 1,638,350 voters that aged 15-17 in the youth polls last May.

On Tuesday, the poll body announced that the continuing voter registration for the May 2019 elections nationwide except in Marawi City, will resume on July 2 and will run until September 29.

The offices of their respective Election Officers in their localities are ready to accept application from Mondays to Saturdays, including holidays. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
