COTABATO CITY — A math major from the state-run university in Kabacan, North Cotabato, who placed second in this year’s Licensure Examination for Teachers, advised students to take the test very seriously and to be positive.

“Stay focused and increase reading time for it will surely help you pass the board examination,” said Ashley Coleen Ortiz who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in Kabacan.

Ortiz, who obtained a score of 92.60 percent, graduated magna cum laude in March. The native of Carmen, North Cotabato immediately took the licensure examination.

“I expected to pass but I did not expect to be on the second spot,” the shy 20-year-old said Saturday.

The eldest daughter of Eduard and Annabelle Ortiz of Barangay Poblacion Carmen, the young Ortiz plans to teach in her own town and bring back the book reading habit to pupils in the face of computer technology that most kids are currently hooked into.

Meanwhile, two other students from USM Kabacan were among the top 10 in the LET board examination results released Friday.

Genemar Cimafranca, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Filipino; and Wrendell Juntilla, with a BSSE major in Mathematics (magna cum laude), shared the 7th spot in the test with a score of 91.60.

The USM community is set to celebrate the victory the three students had achieved. A total of 111 USM graduates passed the elementary level, while 401 passed the secondary level LET exams.

Landing on the 8th spot was Rosielyn Gumaan, 20, of Barangay Pigcawaran, Alamada, North Cotabato.

She graduated cum laude at the Southern Christian College in Midsayap, North Cotabato, with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education major in Mathematics.

This year’s LET examination was held last Sept. 30 in at least 28 Professional Regulation Commission testing centers nationwide.
