NPC head gets seat in int’l privacy body

MANILA — National Privacy Commission (NPC) Commissioner Raymund Liboro is now among the five members of the executive committee of the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners (ICDPPC), the premier global forum on data protection and privacy.

In a statement Thursday, NPC said Liboro joins other privacy chiefs from Australia, Canada, Burkina Faso, and United Kingdom as ICDPPC executive committee.

“It is an honor for the NPC to represent the country at the ICDPPC, especially in a leadership capacity. This is an acknowledgement of the hard work we expend, as well as the country’s commitment to data protection,” Liboro said.

“Having a seat at the committee’s table to take part in addressing challenges that privacy regulators face is definitely a privilege for the NPC,” he added.

The ICDPPC links 119 privacy and data protection authorities globally to provide leadership at the international level in data protection and privacy.

“It’s an opportunity for learning from each other’s experience. The Philippines — although young — has a lot to contribute too, especially in assisting new members,” Liboro said.

The ICDPPC is currently holding the 40th International Conference, which focuses on digital ethics, in Brussels, Belgium.

“What we are seeing today is a crisis of trust fueled by unauthorized profiting, surveillance, and increasing cases of personal data breaches. It’s a hint for us (to) take a different tact and integrate ethics in the way we process personal data,” Liboro said.

The NPC has been a member of ICDPPC since October 2016, co-authoring resolutions on artificial intelligence and e-learning, among others. (Kris Crismundo/PNA)
