Obiena dominates Germany tilt

By Ashley Bercasio

After a lackluster sixth place finish at the Stockholm Diamond League, Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena immediately submitted a rebound performance topping the Jump and Fly tournament on Sunday, July 3 (PH time) in Heichengen, Germany.

The two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist needed all of his three attempts to clear the 5.80-meter mark.

China’s Huang Bokai finished second after recording 5.50m while Vincent Hobbie of Germany completed the podium with 5.10m.

Obiena, the world’s no. 6 pole vaulter, tried to rewrite his 5.93m Asian record but failed to overcome the 5.94-meter mark. – gb
