Daily average new COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila rose by 19% in the past seven days, OCTA Research Group reported Friday, May 20.

In its latest report, OCTA said the seven-day average new cases in Metro Manila went up to 71 during the May 13 to 19 period from the previous 59 during the May 6 to 12 period.

Meanwhile, the reproduction number, which means the number of individuals infected by one case, increased from 0.76 (low) to 0.90 (moderate).

The positivity rate or the ratio of individuals testing positive remained at 1.2%, which is considered “very low.”

The one-week average attack daily rate likewise increased to 0.50 from 0.42, while hospital utilization rate remained at 22%.

Metro Manila remained at low risk.

The Department of Health (DOH) clarified the slight increase in cases “do not translate into increases in admissions or utilization rates which remain at low risk ranging 19-23% of total and ICU beds in the capital region.”

“In light of this, the DOH reminds the public that everyone can do their part in preventing further transmission by continuing to adhere to [minimum public health standards] and protective health protocols,” DOH said in a message to reporters.

“Let’s likewise get vaccinated and boosted for the added protection it provides against the COVID-19 virus. New COVID-19 virus variants may emerge and may cause a spike in cases if immunity is not secured through vaccination and boosters.” – ag
