Ombudsman orders DILG to serve dismissal order vs Iloilo mayor

MANILA — The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to serve the dismissal order against Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

This after the Ombudsman confirmed the decision imposing the penalty of dismissal against Mabilog for the case of “serious dishonesty relative to unlawful acquisition of wealth.”

The dismissal from post of Mabilog was approved by Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang on Oct. 6, 2017.

Likewise, the Ombudsman on Friday furnished the DILG the copy of its decision for the implementation of the dismissal order.

The Ombudsman also perpetually disqualified Mabilog from holding any public office and that all his retirement benefits are forfeited.

The complaint stemmed from the case filed by former Iloilo provincial administrator Manuel Mejorada.

In 2015, Mejorada filed before the Ombudsman the case of plunder, dishonesty, grave misconduct and perjury against Mabilog.

In his complaint-affidavit, Mejorada claimed that the wealth of Mabilog increased by PHP54 million when he became Iloilo city mayor.

He added that Mabilog did not declare properly his properties in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) in 2014.

Mejorada questioned the accumulation of properties by Mabilog, which he said, could not be purchased if his salary as city mayor and his income as a businessman would be the basis.

Included in the questioned properties is the house of Mabilog in Barangay Tap-oc, Molo, Iloilo City, which President Rodrigo Roa Duterte described as a “mansion”.

The complaint added that Mabilog failed to declare in his SALN where he derived his properties. (Perfecto Raymundo, Jr./PNA)
