The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) on Tuesday said efforts are now underway to de-escalate tensions in Tipo-Tipo town, Basilan, following a series of clashes linked to “rido” or clan feud.
“Our local peace mechanisms are actively engaged and providing full support to the security sector and the local government to ensure the swift de-escalation of the conflict,” OPAPRU Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said in a statement.
He added that they are closely monitoring the situation.
“While we are still gathering complete details, initial reports suggest the incident may stem from a ‘rido’ (clan feud). We assure the public that the Provincial Government of Basilan, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are already on the ground to manage the situation and help de-escalate tensions,” Galvez said.
The OPAPRU chief also called on everyone to remain calm, avoid spreading speculation, and allow the authorities and peace partners to work toward a peaceful and just resolution.
As this developed, Galvez said they are offering their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Ustadz Nadzmi “Bahang” Taharin, an Islamic teacher and village councilor, who was shot and killed last Oct. 21 at a bus terminal in Barangay Malinis, Lamitan City, Basilan.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the heinous act of violence that led to his untimely death in the island province of Basilan,” he added.
Like Galvez, the PNP, in a statement, also condemned the attack.
“We appeal to everyone to reject violence and revenge and instead support the joint peace and law enforcement initiatives now being undertaken by the AFP, PNP, and local leaders, including the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF),” said acting PNP Chief PLtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
Rido-linked
Meanwhile, the AFP, in a separate statement, confirmed that the situation in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan stemmed from a local rido-related conflict between community groups.
“The incident is now under control, with the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities and the Provincial Government of Basilan facilitating dialogue and de-escalation,” it said.
The AFP, through its Western Mindanao Command and Joint Task Force Orion, said it continues to coordinate closely with the PNP, the Basilan Council of Elders and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front leadership to restore normalcy and protect civilians.
“We urge the public to remain calm and continue supporting the peace process. The AFP remains committed to sustaining peace and stability in Basilan and across Mindanao through cooperation, trust, and shared responsibility,” it added. (PNA)
