Some 780,000 kilograms of smuggled refined sugar worth approximately P85 million were seized at the Port of Subic on Wednesday, March 15.

An operation conducted by the Department of Agriculture Office of the Assistant Secretary for Inspectorate and Enforcement (DA-IE), Sugar Regulatory Administration, and Philippine Coast Guard, resulted in the seizure of 30 containers of misdeclared agricultural products under the consignee MFBY Consumer Goods Trading.

The products, which were purported to consist of slipper outsoles and styrene butadiene rubber, were actually 520 bags (50 kilogram per bag) of refined sugar.

The consignee will be prosecuted for misdeclaring and misclassifying the shipment under Republic Act No. 10611, the Food Safety Act of 2013, and No. 10845, the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016. Katrina Gracia Consebido/cf
