‘Pagkain Natin: Food of Our Ancestors’ episodes released

The episode lineup for “Pagkain Natin: Food of Our Ancestors” in celebration of Filipino culinary heritage has been released during the nation’s celebration of the quincentennial anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world.

The 10-episode video series was created in partnership with the National Quincentennial Committee and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines by the Mama Sita Foundation, and can be viewed at Mama Sita’s Recipes YouTube channel.

The first episode titled “The Welcome” released on May 26 features food as a gift of welcome and kindness. It recounts how the Suluans greeted Ferdinand Magellan and his crew with coconuts, bananas, palm wine, and other food to ease their hunger, and explains how sharing food is among the Filipino ways of expressing hospitality to guests and strangers.

This episode is followed by “The Coconut” which relates food to happiness, and “Tuba” which connects food and beverage with festive and ritual cuisines.

The fourth episode titled “Vinegar” will present culinary heritage covering skills and knowledge passed from one generation to another. The fifth episode “Fish” will tackle preservation and the sustainability of water and marine food.

Food as expressions of cultural diversity, inheritance, devotion, talent, and innovation will be featured in episodes six to 10, titled “Fowl,” “Rice,” “Leaf Wrapping,” “Roasted Fish,” and “From 1521 to 2021.” (NBDB) AG-jlo
