Palace condoles with victims of massive quake in Japan

MANILA — Malacañang offered prayers to victims of a massive quake that shook Osaka on Monday, killing three people and injuring hundreds of others.

“We offer our prayers to the people of Japan who were affected by the magnitude 5.9 earthquake that struck their western region this morning,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.

Roque, meanwhile, assured that the Philippine Consulate in Osaka is also monitoring the conditions of Filipino workers in the city.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs, through the Philippine Consulate General in Osaka, continues to monitor the situation and remains in touch with the leaders of the Filipino community in the Kansai Region to check the condition of our kababayans there and make sure all are safe and accounted for,” he added.

Earthquakes are common in Japan since it is part of the “Ring of Fire,” an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity. (Azer Parrocha/PNA)
