Palace declares May 28 special holiday in Imus

IMUS CITY, Cavite — This city known as the country’s “Flag Capital” will observe a special non-working holiday on Monday, May 28, pursuant to Proclamation No. 493 released by Malacañang Palace on Tuesday.

The Palace declaration, signed by Acting Executive Secretary Michael P. Ong, cites the annual commemoration of the ‘Battle of Alapan,’ otherwise known as the “National Flag Day” as a special celebratory occasion.

“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Imus be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” Ong said.

Imus City, declared as ‘Flag Capital of the Philippines’ is the site where the original Philippine Flag sewn in Hong Kong by Marcella Agoncillo was first waved after Filipino revolutionary forces led by General Emilio Aguinaldo emerged victorious against the Spanish soldiers in the historic ‘Battle of Alapan’ on May 28, 1898.

The said event paved the way for the birth of the First Philippine Republic. (PNA)
