In a press briefing held at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday, May 14, Palace Press Officer and Presidential Communications Office Usec. Claire Castro has denied any involvement of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

When quizzed by the media about President Marcos’ confidence that the Vice President’s trial will proceed amid having half of his endorsed candidates being elected as senators in the 2025 midterm polls, Castro declared that the Chief Executive declined to comment on the matter.

“Wala pong anumang balita patungkol sa pag-pursue ng Pangulo sa impeachment, o sa impeachment trial ni VP Sara. So, iyan po ay ating tinututulan at pinasisinungalingan po,” she said.

In February this year, President Marcos said the executive department has no role in any impeachment process.

“Walang role ang executive sa impeachment,” President Marcos stressed.

The 1987 Constitution states that the impeachment of officials is an exclusive act of the bicameral Congress. The impeachment trial falls under the jurisdiction of the legislative branch, which is a co-equal executive branch.
