MANILA — Malacañang has suspended work in government offices and classes in public schools in all levels in Metro Manila on Tuesday starting 1 p.m. due to bad weather brought about by Typhoon “Henry”.
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea has issued a Memorandum Circular on the suspension, pursuant to the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
“Upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and in view of the continuing inclement weather brought about by Typhoon “Henry”, work in government offices and classes in public schools at all levels in Metro Manila, are hereby suspended effective 1 p.m. today, 17 July 2018,” Medialdea said in a statement.
However, agencies of the government involved in the delivery of basic and health services, disaster preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and other vital services will continue with their operations.
The Office of the Executive Secretary said that it will leave the suspension of work in private companies and offices to the sound discretion of their companies/employers.
State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) earlier said that moderate to heavy rain showers are expected after Henry made landfall over Cayagan’s Fuga Island early Tuesday.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, PAGASA said Henry has intensified into a tropical storm and is now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
However, there will still be monsoon rains over Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro Provinces, Palawan, and Western Visayas and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the rest of the country.
PAGASA has advised residents living in low-lying and mountainous areas to continue monitoring for updates, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and take actions against possible flooding and landslides. (Azer Parrocha/PNA)
