President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. officially led the commemoration of National Heroes Day in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City this Monday, where he honored both known and unsung heroes and heroines for their indispensable contribution to the betterment of the nation.

In his speech, he honored Teresa Magbanua, often referred as the Visayan Joan of Arc, among the countless figures that have molded the country’s destiny, amid historic struggles that challenged the principles of freedom and dignity that continue to be cherished by the citizenry today.

President Marcos said, noting that heroes are not only born from the battlefield, but can also be found in everyday life, “We are fortunate that the Inang Bayan (motherland) continuously gives rise to heroic individuals best exemplified by our farmers, fisherfolk, workers, teachers, soldiers, law enforcers, scientists, and countless ordinary men and women who, in extraordinary ways, fulfill their duties. On this occasion, we extend our deepest gratitude and highest regard.”

Moreover, the President emphasized the “Para sa Bayan” motto, which he cited as the go-to phrase by the citizenry that exemplifies patriotism epitomized by genuine deeds towards one another.

The Chief Executive likewise urged Filipinos to follow in the footsteps of predecessors who stood up against oppression and other civil injustices, building upon their timeless legacy by embodying the indomitable spirit of service, compassion, and love for one’s country.

President Marcos persuaded the masses, “As we continue on our journey of nationhood, let us emulate their examples by manifesting our patriotism through acts of genuine service to our people. Through simple but meaningful acts of compassion to our brothers and sisters, we can be our generation’s heroes, bringing forth the Bagong Pilipinas we aspire.”

Under Republic Act 9492, the nation observes National Heroes’ Day every last Monday of August. The holiday commemorates the “Cry of Pugadlawin” on August 23, 1896, that began the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule.

Firm stance against corruption

At the same event, the Chief Executive reiterated his resolve against those engaging in corrupt practices, rigging the system to benefit the few at the expense of Filipinos’ welfare, health, and safety, among others.

The President also reminded Filipinos of their participatory role in exposing the truth and uncovering malpractices in society and in government amid various challenges, calling on the youth to face the realities of the present time.

President Marcos said, vowing that the government would aid the citizenry in its resolve, “Kung hindi natin maihahanda ang kabataan sa pagtatanggol sa ating kalayaan, ipinagkakanulo natin hindi lamang ang sakripisyo ng ating mga bayani, kundi pati na rin ang kinabukasan ng ating bansa.”

These pronouncements reflect his earlier sentiments on questionable flood-control projects in the provinces of Bulacan and Benguet, which aggravated the problem and caused undue harm to their intended beneficiaries.
