President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. supported the establishment of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting the proposed AI Engagement Platform’s strategic approach to digital governance.
Marcos stressed on the technological advancements that responsible and inclusive AI could bring to the region, during the ASEAN Leaders’ Interface with representatives of ASEAN – Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday.
“We fully support this initiative and recognize its potential for a future ASEAN Centre of Excellence for AI, built on innovation, ethical standards, and transparency,” the President said.
“Such Centre can lead in shaping an AI ecosystem that empowers our people, safeguards our values, and contributes to sustainable development throughout our region.”
The President also lauded the ASEAN Talent Development and Mobility Initiative, welcoming further collaboration on student mobility, digital literacy, and upskilling.
He also expressed support for the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, underscoring the role of the private sector in building a digital ASEAN through investments in digital infrastructure and human capital, “We must continue to invest in our people. A digitally literate, adaptable workforce is the foundation for any progress we hope to achieve.”
He also welcomed the ASEAN-BAC’s assessment of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement implementation, but also warned that excessive regulation should not become a barrier to trade.
“To become a global trade and investment hub, ASEAN must keep goods and services flowing smoothly,” Marcos said.
“At the same time, ASEAN can begin looking into strategic trade management to equally ensure secure trade in our region.”
PBBM: Equip ASEAN youth with digital resilience, literacy
During the ASEAN Leaders’ Interface with Representatives of ASEAN Youth, Pres. Marcos called on the member states to strengthen digital literacy and resilience among youth to combat cyber threats.
“The world we know is rapidly changing, driven by technology and other advancements in the digital frontier,” Marcos said, citing the “dark side” of technology such as online scams, cyber bullying, the proliferation of mis- and disinformation, and the potential abuse and misuse of AI.
“We must therefore equip our youth with digital resilience that will enable them to navigate online spaces with a critical lens, and to use technology to amplify their voices and contributions to ASEAN’s regional growth.”
