MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared Feb. 24 as a special non-working day, moving the celebration of the 37th EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary from Feb. 25.

Proclamation No. 167, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin by the authority of the President on Thursday, enables Filipinos to avail the benefits of a longer weekend pursuant to the principle of holiday economics.

“To enable our countrymen to avail of the benefits of a longer weekend pursuant to the principle of holiday economics, the celebration of EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary may be moved from 25 February 2023 (Saturday) to 24 February 2023 (Friday), provided that the historical significance of EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary is maintained,” the proclamation read.

“Now, therefore, I, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Friday, 24, February 2023, as a special (non-working) day throughout the country,” it added.

Under the proclamation, the Department of Labor and Employment was directed to issue the appropriate circular to implement the proclamation for the private sector.

Proclamation No. 42, dated Aug 22, 2022 as amended by Proclamation No. 90 dated Nov. 11, 2022 declared Feb. 25, 2023 or the EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary Saturday as a special non-working day throughout the country.

Proclamation No. 42 states that having a longer weekend pursuant to the principle of holiday economics will help “encourage domestic travel and increase tourism expenditures in the country.”

It was the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that adopted holiday economics to boost domestic tourism. (PNA)
