PFL Cup to be named Copa Paulino Alcantara

MANILA — The inaugural Philippine Football League (PFL) Cup is now set.

The board of directors of Liga Futbol Inc. (LFI) approved the implementation of the midseason tournament pitting all the six PFL squads during the board’s fourth meeting last week.

The new tournament will be named Copa Paulino Alcantara in honor of the Filipino football legend, who starred for Barcelona and the Philippine national team during the 20’s.

“Of course, we know that he is probably one of the best Filipinos who have played the sport. He is a legend not only here but also in Barcelona. It gives us pride to name the Cup after him,” said Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta, who also acts as the LFI chairman.

A separate tournament from the PFL regular season, the winner of the Copa Paulino Alcantara will earn a seat in next year’s Asian Football Confederation Cup. (Ivan Stewart Saldajeno/PNA)
