Negating the first announcement of Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) last July, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Thursday that the Philippines will continue to host the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

The good news was exposed by the DFA, together with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)Chair William “Butch” Ramirez and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr.

In a press conference, DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said that the Philippines will still continue to host the biennial tournament, which will give the nation a chance to showcase the talented athletes supported by the country’s progress in the world of sports.

“Glory to God, our athletes will have a chance not only to showcase their sports and their talents, but also the new Philippines which we expect in the next two years,” he said.

Moerover, according to Cayetano, the 2019 SEA Games is also expected to boost the Filipino athletes’ preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

It can be remembered that the Philippines last hosting of the SEA Games was in 2005, wherein the country won 113 gold medals. | Tretch Melarpes – PTV
