LAOAG CITY — Employees of the Ilocos Norte Capitol witnessed the flying of the Philippine flag at half-mast on Monday morning for incumbent Ilocos Norte Board Member Mariano Marcos II, who died of cardiac arrest on Friday evening.
The 64-year-old businessman is a nephew of former president Ferdinand Marcos. He was running for vice governor in the May 13 elections.
The Marcos family announced that his remains lie at the Marcos mansion in Batac City until Tuesday before being brought to Manila for interment.
“It was an honor working with you, sir. We just want to put in mind the memories of a brilliant leader, a close friend and so humble in his ways and approach,” said Provincial Treasurer Josephine Calajate on her Facebook account.
Sources said Marcos was supposed to board a plane with his nephew, Senior Board Member Matthew Joseph Manontoc at the Laoag International Airport when he was found lying on the comfort room floor.
He was rushed to the nearby Laoag City General Hospital’s emergency room but was declared dead a few minutes later.
He is survived by his wife Cecilia Araneta and their three children.
