PH joins Australian initiative on women

MANILA — The Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) has proposed to craft and implement more gender-sensitive programs in the Philippines with focus on further empowering women.

The proposal was made by PCOO Assistant Secretary Marie Rafael during the Australian Regional Women’s Leadership Initiative in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on April 4-7.

“We engaged with other countries in discussing how to be more gender-sensitive and what to come up with more programs that could benefit different genders in our own countries,” she said.

The event focused on enhancing women’s access to professional opportunity and what countries can do to empower and support women as leaders in the region.

Participants include select women who have studied in Australia under an Australian government-funded scholarship representing Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam.

The Australia Awards Women’s Leadership Initiative has invested AUD5.4 million for the period of 2017 to 2022.

It initially seeks to increase the number of female Australia Awards alumni who hold positions of influence in all sectors and spheres of society and enable them to use their acquired skills to contribute to sustainable development outcomes for the Pacific.

Rafael is an Australia Awards Scholar with Master of Laws degree at the Australian National University.
