A motor launch (M/L) carrying an estimated PhP64 million worth of illegal tobacco was reportedly intercepted by the Philippine Navy during operations in the waters of Tawi-Tawi on March 9.

The Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) said in a statement that navy ship BRP Jose Loor Sr. (PC390) was conducting a maritime security patrol when it encountered M/L Yasmen at the vicinity of Manuk Mangkaw Island in Simunul town.

Authorities then boarded the vessel and discovered the cache of undocumented tobacco goods.

“The estimated market value of these confiscated goods stands at an astonishing PhP64 million,” NFMW revealed.

It added that the confiscated items were turned over to the Bureau of Customs Sub-Port Bongao Station for proper disposition and further investigation.

Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Donn Anthony Miraflor said the operation highlighted the Navy’s commitment to protect the country’s borders.

“We remain resolute in our mission to uphold maritime security and promote lawful commerce within Philippine waters. The Philippine Navy stands ready to confront and deter any threat to national sovereignty and maritime safety,” said Miraflor, who also serves as Commander of NFWM. – avds
