PH ranks 47 in 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The Philippines ended at number 47 in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where the United States (U.S.) was awarded the overall winner of the event.

As the Olympics ended, the U.S. grabbed 39 gold medals, 41 silver, and 33 bronze for a total of 113 medals while China followed with 38 gold medals, 32 silver, and 18 bronze with a total of 88 medals. The host country Japan placed in number five with 27 gold medals, 14 silver, and 17 bronze with a total of 58 medals.

The Philippines ranked 47th with one gold medal, two silver, and one bronze medal with a total of four medals.

For the gold medal, Zamboangueño weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz edged Liao Qiuyun of China to nab the medal in the women’s 55-kilogram weightlifting event at the Tokyo International Forum on July 26. It is the Philippines’ first gold medal.

For the two silver medals, boxer Nesthy Petecio settled for silver in the women’s boxing featherweight finals on Aug. 3. The Filipina boxer had a 5-0 unanimous decision loss against Japan’s Sena Irie during the finals match at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

Moreover, flyweight boxer Carlo Paalam faced Great Britain’s Galal Yafai in the final round of the men’s flyweight division in the Olympics where Paalam clinched the silver medal via a split decision on Aug. 7.

Lastly, Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial fell short after getting a 3-2 split decision defeat against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak in the men’s middleweight division on Aug. 5. Marcial was awarded the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, the next Olympics will be conducted in Paris, France in 2024.
