PH wins bronze in AOFC Cup after edging SoKor on golden goal

MANILA — The Philippine floorball team went home with the bronze medal in the Asia Oceania Floorball Confederation Cup after beating South Korea in overtime, 6-5, in the third-place game at the Alonte Sports Arena on Friday.

Ryan Hallden scored the golden goal for the Philippines, which won despite blowing a 5-3 lead late in regulation.

Led by Hallden’s first goal of the third period, the Philippines mounted a comeback from 2-3 down in the final frame and took the 5-3 advantage with only 5:30 left in regulation.

However, late goals from Baek Seung-Hoon and Lee Eu-Sung, the latter coming off an empty net tactic, forced the 5-all tie with only seven seconds left in the third period, and the Philippines failed to come up with an attempt as regulation ended.

SoKor then suffered a huge blow as Kang Jung-Yeol had to sit out for two minutes for a hard foul, leading to a power play by the Philippines that set up Hallden’s heroics.

The third-place finish by the Philippines is five places better than its eighth-place finish in the 2017 staging of the said tournament in Thailand.
