Phivolcs: No tsunami threat following 6.5-magnitude quake in Papua New Guinea

There is no tsunami threat following the magnitude 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck Papua New Guinea Wednesday afternoon, March 1, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The quake, which had a depth of 583 kilometers, hit waters off Bismack Sea at 1:36 p.m. (local time).

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” Phivolcs said.
