The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) have recently recorded 69 volcanic tremors in Taal Volcano.
In a briefing, PHIVOLCS Director Undersecretary Renato Solidum Jr. assessed the tremors to be caused by “hydrothermal activity”.
“Tumataas ang posibilidad na magkaroon ng phreatic eruption or explosion, katulad ng nangyari noong initial part ng January 12, 2020 activity ng Taal Volcano (The possibility of having a phreatic eruption or explosion is increasing just like what happened on the initial part of January 12, 2020 of the activity of Taal Volcano),” he explained.
USec. Solidum pointed out the possibility of a yearly recurrence every time the volcano exhibits a strong activity.
“Itong nangyaring activity sa kasalukuyan ay may kaugnayan doon sa nangyari noong January 2020 sa kadahilanang weeks and months after ng eruption, umakyat ang magma na nag-resupply sa ilalim ng Taal Volcano (The current activity is related to what happened in January 2020 for the reason that weeks and months after the eruption, the magma that resupplied from the bottom of the Taal Volcano has ascended).”
Dir. Solidum reminded that there should be no one within the 14-kilometer radius of the volcano island and residents are prohibited to return because it is a permanent danger zone. -PTV News Online
