Pinay fencers nab silver and bronze medals

MALAYSIA—Talented Pinay fencers grabbed silver and bronze in the women’s individual fencing foil in the 29th Southeast Asian Games at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition center Hall 6, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Monday.

The two-time UAAP junior fencing standout Kyle Catantan loss to Singaporean Amita Marie Nicolette Berthi, 15-7, in the finals to take home the silver medal for the Philippines.
Meanwhile, 16-year old rookie fencer Maxine Esteban grabbed the bronze medal feat after being overpowered by Berthi in the semifinals, 15-9.

“I wasn’t really expecting this… sobrang nagulat ako at the same time thankful na nanalo ako sa competition, Esteban said.”

This is the first Asian Games stint of Catantan and Esteban and both vowed to bring more honor to the country.
