PNP Chief set to retire next week, Año recommends 3 possible successors

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Archie Gamboa is set to retire next week.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya has confirmed that DILG Sec. Eduardo Año has recommended three names to take the place of the retiring PNP Chief but “can’t reveal the names and it’s now up to the President.”

If seniority will be the basis, members of PNP Command Group may be considered as candidates for the highest post. This includes PNP Deputy Chief for Administration Police Lieutenant General Camilo Cascolan, PNP Deputy Chief for Operations and Commander of the Joint Task Force COVID Shield Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar, and PNP Directorial Staff Chief Lieutenant General Cesar Binag.

President Rodrigo R. Duterte may still designate anyone he deems fit. Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that the Chief Executive has yet to chose but will immediately announce it if a new PNP Chief is chosen.

The police force hopes that President Duterte announces the new PNP chief next week. If not, the PNP Deputy Chief for Administration will be assigned as the Officer-in-Charge. A term extension for Gamboa is also possible depending on the President’s decisio

Meanwhile, the PNP is preparing for the possible Change of Command and Retirement Honors Ceremony next week.
