PNP committed to improve disaster response skills: chief

MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reiterated its commitment to tactical competence and readiness in times of natural disasters.

Speaking at the start of Rescue Summit 2018 at the Quezon City Memorial Circle on Thursday, PNP Chief Director General Oscar

Albayalde said the 190,000-strong police force remains committed to sharpening its skills in handling disasters and calamities.

“This Rescue Summit manifests our clear vision to work hand in hand during the perilous times of calamities, disasters, and mishaps,” Albayalde said.

Rescue Summit 2018 aims to raise public awareness for disaster response and survival in anticipation of “The Big One”, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that can possibly hit Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

The day-long rescue summit was the result of the February 19 accord between the Department of the Interior and Local Government and UNTV, Inc.

The highlights of the event include a rescue competition involving rescue groups from the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Cordillera; exhibit of modern equipment, vehicles, and rescue tactics; a series of seminars on the essential knowledge on calamities and disasters; and situational discussions simulating actual scenarios of natural and man-made disasters, calamities, accidents, and mishaps. (Benjamin Pulta/PNA)
