PNP probes shooting of PSG officer

MANILA — The Presidential Security Group (PSG) on Tuesday said they have launched an investigation into the shooting incident that claimed the life of one of its officers inside the PSG Complex in Malacañang.

In a press briefing, PSG commander, Brig. Gen. Lope Dago, said Major Harim Gonzaga, 37, was found dead inside his quarters with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Dagoy said it was Gonzaga’s wife, Shiela, who found the dead officer at around 8:50 a.m. and called for help.

Dagoy said personnel from the Philippine National Police’s Scene of the Crime Operation (SOCO) were immediately sought to assist in the investigation.

Initial investigation showed Gonzaga succumbed to a lone gunshot wound that pierced his heart.

The gun used in the shooting reportedly belonged to the fallen officer. A spent shell and ammunition were recovered at the scene and are now with the SOCO.

“There were no apparent signs of struggle in the scene of the incident. According to SOCO, there were also no initial signs of foul play. Maayos naman lahat,” he said.

Dagoy said PSG does not want to speculate on the cause of death in respect to the privacy of Gonzaga’s family hence, will wait for the SOCO’s result of investigation.

“We really cannot speculate on the real cause of death. Is it suicide? Accidental firing? We will leave it up to SOCO,” Dagoy said. (PNA)
