PNP seeks custody of ex-BOC intel officer from Senate

MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday has coordinated with the Senate to seek custody of resigned Bureau of Customs (BOC) intelligence officer Jimmy Guban.

Chief Supt. Benigno Durana, PNP Spokesperson, said Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chair Richard Gordon will take the PNP’s request into consideration pending submission of the committee’s report on the matter.

Durana also said PNP chief Oscar Albayalde has directed Criminal Investigation and Detection Group head, Director Roel Obusan, to personally coordinate with Gordon regarding Guban’s case.

“Let’s wait for the Committee’s report and the outcome of Police Director’s Obusan coordination with Senator Gordon,” Durana told reporters.

On Wednesday, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the arrest of Guban for allegedly allowing the entry of tons of suspected “shabu” concealed inside magnetic lifters.

In his speech in Malacañang, Duterte said he ordered Albayalde to arrest and bring Guban to the National Bureau of Investigation.

The President ordered the arrest of Guban as the House of Representatives conducted on Wednesday an inquiry into the alleged smuggling of PHP6.8-billion worth of shabu into the country.

Duterte said Guban faked identification cards to allow the entry of tons of shabu through the magnetic lifters in the BOC.

Guban claimed in a previous Senate inquiry that Senior Supt. Eduardo Acierto had instructed him to find a consignee for the shipment. (Christopher Lloyd Caliwan/PNA)
