MANILA — The nationwide transport strike staged by the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) was generally peaceful, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.
PNP spokesman Chief Supt. John Bulalacao said the PNP National Operations Center in Camp Crame did not receive any report of untoward incident from the police regional offices.
“Although several pockets of mass assembly of striking PISTON members were monitored in some parts of Metro Manila this morning, these did not have any adverse effect on the movement of public utility vehicles and conveyance of commuters.” Bulalacao said.
The National Capital Region Police Office reported that some 95 PISTON members held four separate pickets in Muntinlupa City and in the areas of E. Rodriguez, Old Capitol Site and Novaliches in Quezon City until mid-morning on Monday.
In Central Luzon, some 150 members of indigents’ group Kadamay held a protest rally infront of Lucky Market, Barangay Siling Bata in Pandi, Bulacan.
“As of this time uniformed police are still out in the affected areas providing security to prevent the strikers from harassing non-strike participants,” Bulalacao noted.
The impact of the strike is relatively slight after alternative transport facilities were provided by the PNP, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and other government agencies. (PNA)
