PNP vows justice for baby ‘stray bullet’ victim

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is pressing criminal charges against a man who indiscriminately fired a gun that killed a year-old baby girl in Negros Occidental.

Nomar Ayan Bero, 46, is now under police custodial investigation following his surrender to authorities over the shooting incident in the afternoon of Dec. 5.

“Bero will be charged accordingly, based on the appreciation of the prosecutor of the evidence presented by police investigators,” PNP Chief Police Gen. Dionardo Carlos said as he instructed Western Visayas PNP Regional Director, Police Brig. Gen. Flynn Dongbo, to “closely monitor the progress of investigation to establish an airtight case leading to a successful prosecution”.

According to a police report, the victim was with her grandparents and other kin in their house when they suddenly heard two gunshots followed by a loud sound from the galvanized iron corrugated wall.

The next thing they saw, the baby was lying on the floor with her head bleeding.

The victim was rushed to the hospital in Manapla town and transferred to another medical facility in Bacolod City. Unfortunately, she died past 11:00 p.m. on Dec. 6.

The next day, Bero turned himself in to the authorities and confessed that he was the one who fired twice in the area using a .38 caliber revolver.

“As we dig deeper into this, we would like to check on the documents of the suspects for carrying such firearms. Our investigators are already preparing all material and testimonial evidence to support the case,” the PNP chief said. (PNP-PIO)
