MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) will not condone acts of policemen who kill for profit, newly-appointed police spokesman Senior Supt. Benigno Durana Jr. said Wednesday.
“(W)e will be on guard against those police officers who will be found doing things that are beyond their normal function,” Durana told reporters, adding that so-called bounty hunter policemen face criminal and administrative charges.
“Ang trabaho ng pulis (The job of the police) is within human rights and the rule of law and that is running after wanted person. Yung pagpatay (Killing) is not a policy of the Philippine National Police lalong lalo na ng ating pinuno ngayon sa Philippine National Police, si(especally now that our chief of the Philippine National Police is) Gen. (Oscar) Albayalde,” Durana said on reports claiming that policemen act as bounty hunters.
Durana underscored that the PNP leadership is presently going after scalawags in the organization with 398 personnel now facing criminal charges.
“Talagang priority ng ating (The priority of the) chief of the PNP, napakasimple (very simple), intensified campaign against illegal drugs at the same time cleanse our rank,” Durana added.
The PNP spokesman pointed out that misfits, scalawags and corrupt policemen are very few, with the majority professionally doing their job to secure the country.
“Mangilan ngilan lang yan (There are only a few like that). The majority of the Philippine National Police ay mga matitino (are well-mannered), professional, whose only motive is to serve the people making sure there is a safe and secure environment,” he said. (Benjamin Pulta/PNA)
