Police form task group to probe Davao ambush

DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) on Tuesday formed a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to look into the ambush incident here on Monday afternoon involving a lawmaker in the Autonomous of Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

ARMM Assemblyman Sidik Amiril of the second district of Maguindanao province survived the ambush that occurred in Ciudad Esperanza in Cabantian, Buhangin District, along with two of his security escorts and a driver survived.

His helper, however, died on the spot.

Senior Supt. Alexander Tagum, city police director, in an interview Tuesday said the SITG Amiril is led by Deputy City Director for Operations Supt. Ireneo Caburnay with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) XI, Philippine National Police (PNP) Crime Laboratory-11, DCPO-Investigation and Detection Management Branch (IDMB) and the Buhangin Police Station as members.

Tagum admitted the police is still facing a blank wall on the identity and motive of the assailants. “Eventually we’ll get into the bottom of this,” he assured.

Amiril, his helper Berry Adas ,and security escorts Kaharudin Manda and Jastipy Mamadras, were on board a black pickup driven by Moktar Adam, and were traversing the corner of Macupa and Chico Streets when they were waylaid at around 2:30 p.m by persons on a gray SUV, who had motorcycle-riding men as back up.

Adas, who was at the back of the pick-up, was hit and died on the spot due to a lone gunshot wound in the head.

It was learned that Amiril and his security were wearing bullet-proof vests, and were reportedly on their way to a mall when the incident happened. (Rhoda Grace Saron/PNA)
