Police visibility up after Maguindanao cop shooting

COTABATO CITY – Police said they increased visibility here following the shooting of a Maguindanao cop along a busy street in the city on Sunday.

Declared dead on arrival at a hospital after the 11:00 a.m. shooting was SPO3 Rechel Libosada, 43, assigned with the Shariff Aguak town police force in Maguindanao.

Injured in the same incident was Gerry Aniñon, 40, a “habal-habal” (motorcycle-for-hire) driver that Libosada chartered.

Senior Supt. Rolly Octavio, city police director, said Libosada was back riding with Aniñon along Ilang-ilang Street in Barangay Rosary Heights Mother when a riding-in-tandem suddenly emerged and opened fire at them.

Libosada and Aniñon sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital, but the policeman succumbed an hour later.

Sunday’s incident came amid plans by the city police office to come up with a workable strategy to stop the string of shooting occurrences here perpetrated by riding-in-tandems.

On Friday, a riding-in-tandem also shot dead a motorcycle-riding security guard along Barangay Rosary Heights 13 here for still unknown reasons.

Octavio said they are working double time to complete the plan this week. (Edwin Fernandez/PNA)
