MANILA — Pope Francis expressed his support for Catholic bishops in the Philippines as they convened for their bi-annual meeting in Manila on Saturday.

“His Holiness assures you of his prayers in your efforts to shepherd in truth and love those entrusted to your pastoral care, especially your efforts to advance the mission of the Church in the Philippines,” according to the Pope’s letter which was relayed to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

The Holy Father also sent his blessings to the conference, wishing their meeting bear much fruit in the service of their faithful, helping them to grow in faith and charity.

The meeting was preceded with a Mass presided by Papal Nuncio Archbishop Gabrielle Caccia.

More than 80 members of the CBCP are gathered at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center for their 118th plenary assembly, which will run until Monday.

During the plenary, the bishops discuss matters that affect the Church and the country.

The bi-annual meeting is also held in July.

At present, the CBCP has 86 active members — 82 bishops and four diocesan administrators.
