Power outage in CAR due to ‘Ompong’

MANILA — The entire Cordillera Administrative Region is experiencing power outage due to the effects of typhoon “Ompong,” the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reported Saturday.

NGCP Corporate Communication Officer Melma Batario said since 2 a.m. Saturday, several transmission lines of the NGCP and the distribution utilities have been affected by the strong rains and winds by the typhoon causing power outages in the large portion of northern Luzon.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development – Cordillera Administrative Region reported that as of 12 noon, some 634 families or 2,520 individuals were already housed in evacuation centers in Abra; 1,567 families or 5,496 persons in Apayao; 539 families or 1,861 persons in Benguet; 184 families or 675 persons in Ifugao, 197 families or 228 persons in Kalinga; and 55 families or 231 persons in Mt. Province.

Authorities also reported that the Ambuklao Dam in Bokod and Binga Dam in Itogon, both in Benguet province, started their spilling operations on Saturday.

Ambuklao Dam opened five flood gates at 2.5 meters each while Binga Dam opened six gates with 3.5 meters.

The National Power Corporation has assured that the spilling operation will not affect the flood warning zones along Bokod and Itogon in Benguet. (PNA)
