Powerlifter Kitan wins bronze in ASEAN Para Games

KUALA LUMPUR — Paralympian Agustin Kitan contributed a bronze to the country’s medal tally after finishing third in the 9th ASEAN Para Games powerlifting competition held at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Center (MITEC) Hall 3 in Jalan Duta here Tuesday.

Kitan, who saw action in the 2012 London Paralympics, registered a best lift of 158 kg. in the second round. His first attempt at 155 kg. was good but his third attempt at 160 kg. was unsuccessful.

Thailand’s Narong Kasanun won the gold medal with a best lift of 171 kg., which he achieved in the second round. He tried to lift 174 kg. in the third round but failed. His first try at 165 kg. was good.

The silver medal went to Vietnamese Nguyen Thanh Xuan, who registered his best lift of 170 kg. in the second round. His first attempt at 165 kg. was good but he failed to lift 174 kg. in the third round.

Meanwhile, Adeline Dumapong, who won the country’s first medal in the Paralympics when she got the bronze in Sydney 17 years ago, will compete on Thursday.
