PPCRV wants to become Comelec’s citizen arm for 2018 polls

MANILA — The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) has petitioned the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to become the citizen’s arm for the May 14 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

In the petition, PPCRV Chairperson Rene Sarmiento asked the poll body to be its partner in assisting voters, informing, and providing results of the forthcoming polls to the public.

“PPCRV seeks to continue to serve as the citizen’s arm of the Honorable Commission for the forthcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections to be conducted on the second Monday of May 2018 or on 14 May 2018,” it said.

Once accredited as the Comelec’s citizens’ arm, the church-based group would be conducting voters’ education, candidates’ forum, and poll watching and canvassing for the village and youth polls in May.

The PPCRV was the accredited citizens’ arm by the poll body in the May 2016 national and local elections.

It was formed in October 1991 as a program of the Archdiocese of Manila in preparation for the 1992 elections.

The group has a mass based national constituency composed of individuals of voting age and registered voters, with operating chapters based in various parishes in provinces, cities and municipalities across the country. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
