LUNA, Apayao— Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones on Wednesday urged student athletes in the Cordillera to play with “honesty, courage and dignity” during the opening of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) meet.

“Its not just winning, although that is our goal, to win in your events, but beyond that, it is how you played the game and the lessons you learned in the process,” Briones told the over 7,000 athletes and coaches from the six provinces and two cities of the region.

With the theme “One Team, One Vision,” the annual sports meet showcases the athletic prowess of elementary and high school students and the grassroots sports development of the region from Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Kalinga, Baguio city, Tabuk city and the host province, Apayao.

Briones said the lessons from the event are vital and they will be together as one region in representing the country during the Palarong Pambansa.

Aside from personal development, the CARAA is also an important avenue to assess the DepEd-CAR’s sports curriculum and grassroots development, where the winners and good performers further advance in representing the country as members of the Philippine team.
