Pres. Duterte to speak at UN General Assembly

President Rodrigo Duterte is set to participate in the high-level general debate at the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Presidential Assistant on Foreign Affairs Robert Borje revealed that it “will be the President’s first time to address the UN General Assembly” since he was elected as the country’s Chief Executive. The event will take place on September 22 to 29, 2020.

President Duterte will discuss in his virtual address matters of key importance to the Philippines such as “global response to the coronavirus pandemic, peace and security including terrorism, and geopolitical developments in the Asia-Pacific.”

Borje added that “sustainable development and climate change, the rule of law, justice and human rights, including the situation of migrant workers and refugees as well as peace keeping and United Nations reports,” will also be tackled.

President Duterte has already been inscribed as the twelfth speaker of the 14 speakers in the morning session.

“I would encourage everyone to watch the President and the speakers who will engage in the high-level debate tomorrow, 9 a.m. NY time. But for the Philippines it’s 9 p.m.,” Borje invited. – Report from Mela Lesmoras
