The resignation of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago is “for acceptance” of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Malacañang confirmed Wednesday.
“Hindi po naipaalam sa atin sa ngayon kung sila’y nagkausap pero ang irrevocable resignation ni NBI director ay for acceptance,” Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Usec. and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in a press briefing.
Castro assured the public that ongoing probes, including the case of the missing “sabungeros” will not be affected despite Santiago quitting.
“Marami pa rin naman pong mga tao na may kredibilidad at maaasahan at mapagkakatiwalaan, sila pa rin po ay patuloy na nagtatrabaho para dito,’ she stressed.
The NBI chief tendered his resignation on Aug. 15, which he said takes effect immediately upon the appointment of his replacement.
According to Santiago, there are detractors who have “sinister interest” in his post and constantly make moves to damage his reputation, including making allegations that he receives bribes from e-sabong (online cockfighting) and Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs).
On Monday, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said they are not seeing the appointment of an officer-in-charge, clarifying that Santiago will remain in his position until a new director is named.
Santiago was appointed NBI Director by Marcos in June 2024. (with reports from Clay Pardilla and Louisa Erispe / PTV News)
