President Rodrigo R. Duterte has appointed National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Debold Sinas as the new Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief effective Tuesday, November 10.
This was confirmed by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque in his briefing as he stated that President Duterte reviewed the track record of his appointee and that PMaj. Gen. Sinas has “impressed” the President by his dedication in the war on drugs. “Matagal nang sinasabi ng Presidente na si bagong PNP chief Sinas ay napakalaki ang naitulong sa war on drugs. (The President has long been saying that new PNP Chief Sinas has greatly helped in the war on drugs).”
Sec. Roque also pointed out that “presidential appointments are really very executive in character. It is a prerogative of the President and he need not make any explanation for his appointment.” He encouraged the public to “trust the President on this decision” and that there is nothing to worry about because the chief executive trusts that the NCRPO Chief will be effective in his new position.
He also disclosed that appointment to the post is a matter of “trust and confidence” and that PMaj. Gen. Sinas is “for the moment the most trusted by the President.”
However, the Palace assured that the charges against Sinas will not be cleared since it is “not how our laws operate.” Sinas was heavily criticized after his men organized a mañanita on his birthday while Metro Manila was under strict community quarantine. -PTV News Online
